Cheyenne Woods' mother: '[Earl] would have been so proud'

Cheyenne Woods' Breakout Win and the Legacy Behind It

By John Strege

Saturday night was closing fast on Sunday morning in Phoenix when Cheyenne Woods' final hole from the Australian Ladies Masters was posted on the Internet. Her mother, Susan Woods, wide awake at her computer, had two thoughts immediately come to mind: how proud she was of her daughter, and how proud Cheyenne's late grandfather, Earl Woods, would have been—no less than he had been for Tiger Woods.

1. The Family Legacy and Her First Major Win

  • The Beginning: Cheyenne's father is Earl Woods Jr., Tiger Woods' half-brother. Cheyenne was introduced to golf in the exact same garage in Cypress, California, by the same man—her grandfather, Earl Woods—who introduced Tiger to the game.

  • Making Her Own Name: At 23 years old, Tiger's niece began carving out her own identity by winning her first major professional tour title. She beat a formidable field that included top players like Jessica Korda, Yani Tseng, and Karrie Webb.

  • A Mother's Faith: "I had the same feeling when Cheyenne won the ACC championship a few years back," Susan said. "I knew he [Earl] would have been so proud of her. I just knew it was a matter of time before she'd make it to the top."

2. Support from Her High School Coach, Sister Lynn Winsor

  • Late-Night Joy: Upon receiving the midnight text about the victory, Sister Lynn Winsor, the legendary golf coach at Phoenix's Xavier Prep, was overcome with emotion and couldn't sleep for the rest of the night.

  • Character Over Trophies: Sister Lynn's high school teams have won 31 Arizona state championships, but her standard has always been developing players into better people. She praised Cheyenne for her humility and gratitude, noting that Cheyenne still visits her high school coach a couple of times a year whenever she is in town.

3. Looking Ahead

While this Ladies European Tour (LET) victory did not automatically grant her full status on the LPGA Tour—her ultimate goal—Cheyenne demonstrated that she possesses both the talent and the humble, caring personality that make her a wonderful asset to the game of golf.
