In April 2009, Tom Denhart, age 67, passed away from prostate cancer. After living with and fighting the disease for 16 years it was not a terrible shock but still not an easy reality to accept for the Denhart family. A year later, Tom’s son Evan began his nonprofit career with the goal of raising awareness and educating men about prostate cancer so that other families wouldn’t have to go through what his family had gone through.Every day he misses his father, but Father’s Day is particularly hard as he remembers all the years they spent the day golfing together. Today, as Vice President of Development of ZERO – The End of Prostate Cancer, Evan is helping to end the disease that takes the lives of nearly 30,000 fathers, sons, husbands, partners, and friends by launching ZERO’s Do It For Dad Golf-a-Thon.
The Do It For Dad Golf-a-Thon is a fun and easy way for golfers to enjoy their favorite pastime while helping to end prostate cancer. Participants can play golf any time from June 13 through June15, Father’s Day weekend, on any course, and one hundred percent of the funds raised will go towards ending prostate cancer and raising awareness of this disease that affects one in seven American men
The Do It For Dad Golf-a-Thon is open to all golfers, regardless of their playing ability, gender, or age. Participants can register at www.zerocancer.org and set up a personalized fundraising page to help secure pledges. Registrants then play golf based on their own schedule during Father’s Day weekend, including Friday, and raise money through pledges based on the number of holes played. Signing up is easy and participants can use their own fundraising website to help seek donations from family and friends.
Funds from the Do It For Dad Golf-a-Thon are used to advance lifesaving research, provide financial assistance to patients, and provide early detection and education programs to men fighting prostate cancer and men at-risk for the disease.
